THE DREAM BEHIND THE LICENCE

Becoming a PCO driver is not just about passing a test.

For many candidates, the licence represents a practical goal: becoming a professional driver in London, building a working routine around family and other commitments, developing a new career or creating a route toward greater independence.

That is why our service should not stop at “buy a course”. We help candidates understand the journey, prepare properly, keep their progress organised and think realistically about what comes after the licence.

THE STUDYPARTNERS ROADMAP

We explain the whole journey — not just the exam.

Every candidate starts from a different place. Some have never heard of SERU. Some already have a TfL application. Some have a driving licence but no vehicle. Others have already passed assessments. Our job is to identify the starting point and make the next step understandable.

UNDERSTAND THE REAL REQUIREMENTS

Before you dream about the job, understand what the licence requires.

TfL currently states that applicants must meet eligibility requirements and pass mandatory driver assessments, including Topographical, English speaking and listening, and SERU. Other parts of the process include enhanced DBS, medical fitness, right-to-work requirements and application evidence. Requirements can change, so candidates should always check the current TfL guidance.

WHY OUR ACADEMY EXISTS

We do not want candidates memorising pages. We want them understanding what they are doing.

Our training model is built around explanation → worked example → guided practice → independent practice → check → remediation.

THE LIFE AFTER LICENSING

What could your future as a London PCO driver look like?

A licence is a gateway to work — not a guarantee of earnings. We want candidates to understand the different ways licensed drivers can work and the costs and responsibilities that come with each arrangement.

Work with a licensed operator

TfL states that once licensed, a private-hire driver can work for any private-hire operator licensed in London. That creates choice rather than tying your future to one company.

Use your own suitable vehicle

If you have or later acquire a suitable licensed vehicle, you can explore operator partnerships that accept owner-drivers. Vehicle eligibility, licensing, insurance and operator requirements must all be checked.

Rent or access a vehicle

Some operators and vehicle providers offer rental or vehicle-partner routes. Compare the full cost — not just the weekly rental — before committing.

Build a specialist driving career

Depending on the operator and your vehicle, opportunities can include standard private-hire work, airport transfers, corporate journeys, executive/chauffeur work, school or contract transport and other booked services.

Build a working pattern that suits you

The market includes full-time and part-time opportunities, but the actual hours, job allocation, deductions and flexibility depend on the operator arrangement you choose.

Plan the business side

TfL itself recommends considering income, hours, vehicle purchase or rental, equipment, hire-and-reward insurance and other running costs before becoming a private-hire driver.

Important: TfL says all licensed private-hire drivers must work for a licensed private-hire operator. If you eventually want to accept private-hire bookings yourself as an operator, that is a separate regulatory route requiring an operator licence. “Independent driver” does not mean taking unbooked street fares or operating outside the licensed system.

PLAN THE REAL COST OF YOUR NEW CAREER

We want candidates to make informed decisions, not expensive mistakes.

Before choosing a vehicle or working arrangement, think about the complete cost of driving: vehicle purchase or rental, private-hire insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance, licensing and testing costs, parking, operator/platform deductions and tax. Your working pattern also affects the economics.

What will the vehicle cost each week or month?

What insurance and licensing costs apply?

How much will fuel or charging and maintenance add?

What does the operator keep or charge?

What hours can you realistically work?

What tax and record-keeping responsibilities will you have?
